Around Thanksgiving of 2006 I started to dilate slightly so I was put on modified bed rest….at 28 weeks along.
On 12/23/06 I went to L&D because I was experiencing severe swelling in my left leg. I ended up being admitted due to a blood clot in my leg. (Blood clots or Deep Vein Thrombosis’ are bad because they can break off and travel to the lungs causing a Pulmonary Embolism which is deadly.) After 2 nights in the hospital, I was sent home Christmas Day with twice daily injectable blood thinners. Being on blood thinners posed an issue because if I were to need an emergency C-section, there would be a bleeding/clotting problem so I was monitored closely every week. Both babies decided not to move out of the sunny side up and breech position so a c-section was presented to me as my only option. My doctors scheduled a c-section for 38 weeks which would have been 1/30/07. The plan was for me to enter the hospital early on 1/28 and have my medicine switched to something that would control the bleeding better then deliver via c-section on 1/30…..that was the plan….
On 1/22/07 (37 weeks) I went for a routine ultrasound to measure the babies size/growth. The ultrasound tech called my doctor before we left because the babies were measuring 7 lb 2 oz and 6 lb 12 oz. My doctor asked me to come to his office right away. We talked about 14 lbs worth of babies on board and he sent me to labor and delivery to be admitted right then….I didn’t even get to go home! Anyway, I spend the night in the hospital having my medicine switched and then I delivered the babies the next afternoon, Tuesday, January 23rd via C-section! YIPPEE!!!!
Zachary James came first at 1:11 pm, weighing 7 lbs exactly, and Jacob William followed at 1:12 pm weighing 6 lbs 13 oz! Phew!! Was I glad to have that weight off my lungs! The spinal that I got afforded me the most comfort I'd had in FOREVER!
The next few days in the hospital were spent getting to know my boys and recovering from my c-section. Little did I know, there were complications brewing. Thursday 1/25 was really bad for me. I was in a lot of pain which came to a head Friday morning. Blood tests were ordered and confirmed that I was loosing blood. An ultrasound also confirmed that I was bleeding internally into my abdomen. I was rushed back into surgery on Friday 1/26 were they found 3 liters (approximately ½ my blood volume) of blood in my abdomen. After surgery I was transferred to the Critical Care Department to spend the next 24 hours or so under monitoring. After intense monitoring, I was sent back to my original room and was able to continue my recovery and bonding with my boys. After 10 days in the hospital, the boys and I were finally sent home on Wednesday 1/31!! PHEW!!!

WOW! Our scheduled section was for Jan 30, 2007 as well (delivered jan 16). How funny. It seems like so long ago, but not at the same time. Don't you just love being a mom to them! At times I think having 1 to bond with is special, but 2 is fun!
