Buh-Bye Barnacle

A Hemangioma is a congenital benign tumor or vascular malformation of endothelial cells (the cells that line blood vessels). In infancy, it is the most common tumor.

Zack was born with beautiful, perfect skin, but within the 10 days we were in the hospital he developed two hemangiomas prior to us being released....one on his head and one on his shoulder. I started calling them barnacles because our pediatrician said they were placenta cells that attached during cell division....so calling them barnacles made sense to me. They were cute, flat, and bright red when they first appeared pretty much overnight, and grew FAST. By the time he was 7 weeks old I took a picture because the one on his shoulder was almost the size of a dime. Our pediatrician assured us that they would continue to grow but would most likely fade and practically disappear by the time he was 5 years old. Well, he was right!
Here is a then and now of Zack's barnacle....which is nearly gone. Phew!

That is great it went away so quickly, not even close to 5...more like 2. I had a student with something that looked similar but she was 6 and it was on her face. Poor girl, when kids who didn't know her saw her they would ask "what's on your face"? The tact of children.

I love that you call them barnacles too. They are pretty scary looking at first, especially at the rate they grow. I think K&B's are 95% gone too.
